This photo shows US Navy sailors standing guard aboard the Japanese battleship Nagato in the days following Japan's surrender in August 1945.
Nagato holds the distinction of being the first battleship in the world to mount 16-inch guns. On August 30, 1945, American sailors took control of the ship, a symbolic moment marking the surrender of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
By war's end, Nagato was the last Japanese battleship still afloat. Her story ended at Bikini Atoll in July 1946, when she was sunk as a target during the US atomic bomb tests.
