People who did bull baiting and dog fighting needed to be able to handle and train the dogs. Otherwise, the animal was worthless to them.

Second, out of millions and millions of dogs and people, these attacks are in the thousands, deaths in hundreds. It rarely happens. You're pearl clutching over a statistical anomaly.

Knew a guy whose cousin's neighbor's hairdresser's aunt's florist had a pit bull. Super cuddly, fed the homeless. Then one day it suddenly snapped, slaughtered the entire population of the next town over in under an hour before releasing the covid virus and fleeing to Antarctica.

The people who bred them to fight selected them specifically for animal aggression, not human aggression. And for practical reasons - they had to be able to handle them in order to train and fight them.

@roringthunder They absolutely make great guard dogs. As evidenced by the current moral panic, people fear them. All they have to do is sit there, and people freak out.

They are so scary, apparently, that people are calling for total eradication of the breed. The deterrent value is high.
