When I was working at MIT, I learned that the IITs in India were created with the help of MIT and modelled after MIT.

Since then, I was obsessed with the idea of setting up a world-class research tech university in Pakistan.

I tried for many many years. Running from pole to pillar all the way from President Musharraf to Atta-ur-rehman and the bureaucracy of HEC -- where I was sent from everywhere from COMSATS to UET to VU as models to follow ... it was a thoroughly repulsive experience. I eventually moved back to Pakistan and joined LUMS.

Many years later, when Shehbaz Sharif invited me to join the government during my sabbatical year from LUMS, I saw an another opportunity.

Finally, with the help of the CM, and some serious bureaucratic friction, we created ITU in 2013, our little version of "MIT" in Pakistan, with all the right ingredients.

Buzdar government tried as hard as they could to turn it into an another sarkari university, but it has stayed the course.

Today is its 5th Convocation.

Hopefully, one day it will truly live up to its true vision, and become what I once dreamed in the corridors of MIT ...
