During The “Hague Dialogue”conference Organised by International Criminal Law Foundation held in The Hague, Netherlands, Manzoor Pashteen, leader of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), delivered a speech presenting concrete evidence and facts about the atrocities committed against the Pashtun people by the Pakistani state. Immediately after his speech, Pakistani diplomat Asif Durrani and Pakistan’s ambassador to the Netherlands attempted to raise objections and disrupt the proceedings before walking out of the conference. Their reaction also drew expressions of displeasure from representatives of various countries present at the event.
We are challenging them openly: to face us in a debate on any international stage or forum.

Imposing Governor’s Rule and a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a clear insult to the people’s vote and political will. It also proves what PTM has been saying for years: the ruling elite in Punjab does not respect the political rights, votes, or elected governments of Pashtuns and other oppressed nations. In such a situation, parliamentary politics becomes meaningless.
This is not something new in Pakistan’s history. Just eight days after the creation of Pakistan, on August 22, 1947, the government of Dr. Khan Sahib was dismissed even though it had a majority in the assembly. In 1973, after the Balochistan government was dismissed, Mufti Mahmood resigned in protest. In 1975, the National Awami Party was banned and Governor’s Rule was imposed. In 1994, the government of Pir Sabir Shah was also removed through intervention from the central government.

The same pattern is still continuing. On October 11, the elected government of Sohail Afridi was stripped of its powers, and 12 districts of the province were placed under direct federal control.
But this is not only about political power. It is also about the exploitation of Pashtun land and resources. Water, electricity, gas, and minerals from Pashtun areas are used to generate wealth, while the local people have very little say over their own resources and the money they generate. At the same time, they continue to live with poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.

On October 11, 2024, a historic Pashtun National Jirga was held in Khyber. It called for peace, an end to the war, an end to enforced disappearances, and the right of Pashtuns to have control over their own resources. Even the demands of such a large national gathering were ignored, and the situation has now reached this point. Instead of moving towards peace, the region has seen more instability, while democracy has been further weakened.
History has shown again and again that taking away people’s political rights, removing elected governments, and trying to solve political problems through force only make things worse. They do not bring peace or solve the real problems. They only increase people’s mistrust of the system.

These actions further support PTM’s argument that the political will and economic interests of Pashtuns are kept under the control of the ruling elite in Punjab. The wider interests of global powers and the legacy of colonial rule are also part of this power structure.
The Pashtun issue must be addressed by Pashtuns themselves. Pashtuns should have the right to decide their own political future, their security, and how their natural resources are used. Solutions imposed on the people will never bring lasting peace or real democracy.
