Along these lines, it's worth noting that many of the individuals and groups who have worked extensively on prison and criminal legal reform in NJ have stood in solidarity with those incarcerated in Delaney Hall
A brutal incarceration system entraps us all
Instead of a political gotcha, this could be a moment of realization and introspection about how we as a state want to treat all incarcerated people when they are not able to feed, fend or care for themselves. What conditions are wrong for one are wrong for all-- and vice versa.
Even if revenue numbers are better than expected, the STRUCTURAL deficit will remain -- the state is not raising enough revenue to cover its investments, and those costs continue to rise.
One year can be patched over. But next year always arrives.
More revenue is still needed!
As the New Jersey Legislature continues to hold departmental hearings over the proposed state budget for Fiscal Year 2027, @johnsb01 reports that final revenue numbers, which will come out next week, are expected to be "promising," which could give Governor Sherrill and legislative leaders more flexibility in their negotiations.

Many New Jerseyans on food stamps could see their monthly payments reduced, and approximately 47,000 could lose benefits entirely, under new federal guidelines that may also shift hundreds of millions of dollars in program cost to state taxpayers.

When the big moneyed interests shill for big sports or entertainment events, they always say it'll be an economic boon and have rosy economic projections
But they ignore that these events have costs on local residents that cancel out much of the economic benefit!

Call it a loophole or don't.
The fact is the ABC deduction:
- grew much faster than other deductions
- grew faster than the real-world business environment would suggest
- is used predominantly by very-high-income-earners
One weird thing about the business lobby response to
@GovSherrillNJ proposal to rein in Alternative Business Calculation deductions is insistence that it's "not a loophole."
I don't care what you call it but it's tax code that the wealthy have exploited to reduce their taxes
The total ABC deduction costs the state $193M for FY27
The amount the ABC reform saves is ~$120M for FY27
Keep in mind those earning $500k-$1M still get to keep half the deduction!
This means **the vast majority of this deduction was captured by the top 1% in incomes.**
