The most frustrating thing about public defense is that we are only allowed to help individuals caught in the trap - we are not allowed to dismantle the trap. Gideon was decided in 1963 and our country’s incarceration rate has only exploded since then

Pretending COVID is over, and just doing business as usual, seems to be the plan both for America generally and the criminal justice system particularly. No jury trials (wouldn’t want to infect middle class jurors) but the jail is packed and infected (fuck the poors, as always)

And so they just sit and leave their fates in the hands of cops who mostly think the whole thing is like the flu, or that masks don’t help, or that… you get it

Public defenders are often warned about and trained on avoiding secondary trauma based on things we are routinely exposed to at work. 13 years in and watching COVID spread through the jail and infect my clients is hands down the worst experience yet

My local court is at a stand still because trials are suspended and the jail can’t transport any inmate who is positive or exposed (which is like, most of them)
