Q7 - Call to Action! What can you do to about all these?
Ans 7A - Member States have the powerful voice that will eventually count for decision making. @AfLIACon@WIPO@IFLA@EIFLnet needs all African #librarians to do something immediately!!! #WIPOAfricaSeminar
Ans 7D
It's a CALL TO ACTION! Only African #Librarians can speak to the representatives of their countries before they attend the #WIPOAfricaSeminar which is 10days away.
The time is NOW! Send an email to [email protected] if you need more information.
Thank you
@WIPO@IFLA
@AfLIACon@IFLA@WIPO@EIFLnet From the above thread, it is now glaring that the copyright offices of respective countries work hand in hand with their libraries to bridge the open gaps/ clauses regarding the identified limitations .
Ans 6F - @IFLA@AfLIACon will work closely with archives, museums, education & research institutions to defend common needs & to ensure that our voices are heard.
#WIPOAfricaSeminar@EIFLnet@WIPO
Ans 6E - @IFLA & @AfLIACon will be at the #WIPOAfricaSeminar to defend the interests of the profession & call for copyright regimes that favour access to information. Examples will be shared of the work that #librarians do & how copyright impacts such.
Ans 6D - Librarians are also enjoined to shy examples of the challenges they face without encompassing Copyright laws & how their Institutions can serve the society better with the right laws.
#WIPOAfricaSeminar@IFLA@WIPO@EIFLnet
Q6 - What can African #Librarians do?
Ans 6A-
-Librarians are called to loudly talk about the challenges they face in preserving & providing access to heritage & information, in supporting research & education when the right laws are not in place @WIPO@IFLA
Ans 6C - Among the countries in Africa that have limitations & exceptions for #libraries, the provisions are often not adapted to the digital world as most of the laws were last reviewed more than 20yrs ago! #WIPOAfricaSummit
Q5 - Why #WIPOAfricaSeminar?
Ans 5A- Progress has been difficult with reps of the EU blocking efforts by groups of developing countries to move towards some sort of law. Now, @WIPO has lined up activities to help create awareness & consensus on the way forward. @IFLA@EIFLnet
Q4 - What are #Libraries doing about Copyright limitations & exceptions?
Q4 - Que font les bibliothèques à propos des limitations et exceptions au droit d'auteur?
#WIPOAfricaSeminar@IFLA@WIPO@EIFLnet
Ans 3F -Copyright limitations & exceptions need to be dealt with as a Treaty so that they don't differ country to country. This will remove hindrances for cooperation across borders. @IFLA has done lots of work on this since it appeared on @WIPO's agenda.
#WIPOAfricaSeminar
Ans 3E -The Marrakesh Treaty allows #Libraries & other Institutions to make accessible format copies for the visually disabled, blind or print disabled persons, exchange such materials internationally without authorisation from the creator. #WIPOAfricaSeminar@IFLA@EIFLnet@WIPO
Ans 3D -Treaties are far better than bilateral agreements. They enable uniform laws/ agreements across borders thus fast tracking International action. The Marrakesh Treaty is a good example of how Treaties facilitate access to information @IFLA@WIPO@EIFLnet#WIPOAfricaSeminar
Ans 3C Most importantly, @WIPO negotiates treaties which are crucial in recognising & supporting the rights of creators from one country to another thus making it easy for exchanges & work across borders. @IFLA@EIFLnet#WIPOAfricaSeminar
Ans 3B -@WIPO also:
performs many functions including capacity building & training
-manages databases, registers patents & trademarks
-produces valuable research & guidelines for policymakers, creators & users of intellectual property all over the world.
#WIPOAfricaSeminar
Q3 - Why WIPO?
Ans 3A - The World Intellectual Property Organisation @WIPO is the @UN agency in charge of Intellectual Property which includes patents, trademarks, copyright etc. @WIPO performs many functions including capacity building & training...#WIPOAfricaSeminar@IFLA
Ans 2D - Today's realities demand that #libraries get a modern exceptions & limitations framework that'll enable them use digital tools & work across borders & presently, most countries don't give that. @IFLA@WIPO@EIFLnet#WIPOAfricaSeminar
Ans 2C- Technological changes necessitate that the law keeps up with the potentials of the digital age as allowing photocopying or interlibrary loan is different from making or sharing digital copies & files! @IFLA@WIPO@EIFLnet#WIPOAfricaSeminar
