On her birthday, we are reminded of Fannie Lou Hamer’s wisdom: there are many who have gone before us, paving the way for the work we do today. When we honor that history, we learn from that history – and it becomes a pathway forward.
We withstand by learning with and from each other. No matter our age, role, zip code, or field of expertise, the opportunity to come together and exchange wisdom is never wasted.
It’s important to meet, shake hands, break bread, and learn from one another in shared spaces.
For Public Welfare Foundation’s ‘Withstanding Through...’ essay series, The Community Founder & CEO Shannon Ross shares how self-awareness shaped the trajectory of his life and continues to shape the work of The Community.

History that Helps Us Withstand:
@KidsForwardWI's Carte'cia Weaver lifts up the story of Ella Baker, the seminal Civil Rights Movement organizer who is responsible for the formation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

Progress is often slow – and that's a painful truth that frictions against the urgency of our work.
