In a speech on Tuesday at Brigham Young University (@BYU) — his first public address as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — Dallin H. Oaks (@OaksDallinH) shared four ways to come closer to Jesus Christ.

1. Strengthen our faith in Him.
2. Increase our humility.
3. Seek help from others.
4. Be patient.

“Whatever [your] doubts,” he said, "the way to overcome them is to get closer to our Savior Jesus Christ. Again and again, He has taught us that He is the way.”

It was a special privilege for my wife Kristen and me to be in Burley, Idaho today as I officiated in the dedication of the Burley Idaho Temple.

We are living in a glorious season of temple building. This temple is our 212th dedicated temple worldwide. More than 150 other temples are in design or under construction.

Temples are essential to our Heavenly Father’s plan for His children. In these houses of the Lord, we are taught the most important things we can learn and do in mortality.

The scriptures speak of perilous times, when men’s hearts will fail them. They also speak of worthy disciples escaping these things, of their standing in holy places, and not being moved. Surely the times ahead will call for us to remember our temple covenants and to rely on the blessings promised to us.

I rejoice with you in the dedication of this Burley Temple.

The temple is the House of the Lord, a House built for the sacred work of the Lord God of Israel, our Savior and our Redeemer, to prepare us for exaltation in the celestial kingdom of God.

Our Father in Heaven has taught us to esteem all of His children as our brothers and sisters. For several years, I have attended the Luz de las Naciones event that showcases the cultures and talents of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Latin heritage.

This year’s event was exceptionally memorable, as performers focused on the peace found in the gospel of Jesus Christ and commemorated the 100-year anniversary of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ being preached in South America.

I was again reminded that we are all children of our Heavenly Father. He loves each of us. May we follow Him as we choose to love one another.

Two former presidents of Brigham Young University —President Dallin H. Oaks and President Jeffrey R. Holland (@HollandJeffreyR) —sat down to reflect on the school’s influence and history to mark 150 years since its founding in October 1875.

“BYU is the Lord’s university because it was established by a prophet,” President @OaksDallinH said. “It has been carried on with prophetic leadership to this day. And it places the highest priority for its students and its faculty and its administration and its position in the community to furthering the ideals, the teachings and the values of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

This picture is from the day that Mary and I were married—nearly 63 years ago. It is the greatest blessing of my life to be with Mary. She has blessed our family with direction from the Lord during each stage of our lives together.

When a man and woman are sealed in the temple, they obtain and receive together priesthood blessings and power to direct the affairs of their family.

Women and men have unique roles as outlined in “The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” but their stewardships are equal in value and importance. They have equal power to receive revelation for their family. When they work together in love and righteousness, their decisions are heaven blessed.
