New episode is out with @Jlounsbury11, a high end hockey player development coach who trains players from the NHL on down, and coaches his daughters' teams.
Here's a snippet about when the grind is healthy and when it becomes chasing or borderline delusion (and how to tell!).

For anyone that wants to know how @middmhockey went so damn far in the @NESCACicehockey tourney in only the second season for first time head coach @jacegs, this episode gives a pretty good window into why.
Coach Ceglarski is the man! Humble, dialed in, deeply rooted in the game and it's history, and lots of fresh ideas. Also great perspective on where hockey/sport fits into life.
Enjoy the show!

The “Lie Detector Test" for Evaluating Players
Ben Guite, head men's ice hockey coach at Bowdoin College, on how he uses backchannel referencing (talking to other coaches he trusts) to inform his perspective on players beyond what he can see with his eyes or on a score sheet.

What It Really Takes to Make it and Last in the NHL
Here is Ben Guite, former UMaine standout, 13 yr pro player, and current head men's ice hockey coach at Bowdoin College on what it takes to make it and last in the NHL.
It's an interesting perspective, because while the skill of the modern game has evolved so much, the way players need to be wired to make it hasn't changed: they are the athlete that wants it more than everyone else and is willing to do everything else more than anyone else would, and they are tough people. They take it on the chin and keep getting back up and keep outworking people.
Makes me wonder how much of that is nature vs nurture, but I think I know the answer! A lot of it can't be taught, and the passion needs to come from inside.

Here is a little preview of the episode launching tomorrow with Ben Guite, UMaine standout, 13 yr pro, and current head coach of men's ice hockey at Bowdoin College.
This is a fitting quote and good reminder during tryout season:

Here is a little preview of the new episode dropping tomorrow with two brothers from a legendary college hockey coaching family who are both college hockey coaches themselves!
Hear from @swalshy5, assistant coach at @NanooksHockey, and @TMWalshy, head coach at @GustieMHockey, on whether you need to have played the game at a high level to coach at a high level and whether they are both coaches because they were around it so much or because it's in their blood (or both!).

Who wouldn't want to play for Andy Jones, head coach of d1 @BentleyHockey. Little preview of the @puckacademy episode that will be published next Tuesday.
If you want the best out of people, they need to play for something bigger than themselves. He's so right!
New episode is out!
This one with @Ricer18, the Boxer-Rice Head Coach of Men's Ice Hockey (@BabsonHockey) at @babson.
It's packed full of great nuggets on how to get the most out of players and people as parents and coaches, the most important life lessons that come from sports, some of the downsides of the rise in focus on individual skills, and what it means to "under-coach".

New episode is out! This is an almost 2 hour one with Dwayne Blais, skill development coach with the @DetroitRedWings.
I mean its called a podcast, but to me, it's just an excuse to learn from the smartest minds in the game, and Dwayne is no exception! We have a riveting discussion (to me!) about sport, player development, parenting, and life. I learned so much, that if anyone listens, it is gravy :)
If you care about the intersection of parenting and player development, especially if you are also a hockey fan, this one is for you!

New Puck Academy episode is out!
This one with @mcdougalls2, Senior Associate Head Coach of Sacred Heart University's D1 Men's Hockey Program (@sacredheartmih).
I’ve been asking pod guests at the end of each recording who they’d like to hear from on the show, and multiple guests have said more college coaches, to better understand how they are navigating some of the recent rule changes.
Scott is an interesting one, as he played 4 years at UCONN, coached D3 at Wesleyan (my alma mater!), many years in D1 for Sacred Heart (since 2009!), and his family also owns and runs the Neponset Valley River Rats (@NVRiverRats), a top club program for emerging players here in New England, where he coached for several years, as well.
And this episode does not disappoint. Scott shares insight into the grueling road life of a college coach (illustrated by a nightmare travel story he had just experienced), how he’s been navigating some of the recent changes (CHL players becoming NCAA eligible, transfer portal, NIL, etc), how coaching and player development have been evolving with the game, and his advice for players/families trying to navigate the craziness.
This episode was enlightening for me, as Scott illustrated that the path isn’t just hard/confusing for players these days, it is hard/confusing for coaches too.
