Ta-da! Did you find the #pueo? 👀 The dark plumage of this bird tells us it’s a young owl who recently left the nest but is still dependent on its parents. They hide in the foliage, looking cute as heck while waiting waiting for their parents to bring them a juicy mouse 🥰🦉🍽🐀

#Pueo eat a variety of things ranging from rodents, small birds, and insects. By carefully examining the parts we find in pellets, we can identify the prey species. In this pellet, we found the remains of at least 2 Red-crested Cardinals!

The #pueo hui goes to work, dissecting pellets (regurgitated bits of non-digestible food - i.e. fur, feathers, and bones!) to see what pueo eat!

#Pueo breeding season is in full swing and we've been tracking down chicks! Chicks start wandering away from their ground nests when they are ~15 days old as a way to avoid predators, so finding them even if you know where the nest is can be quite a challenge. #RaptorResearch

Recently we have been watching some #sunsets AND #pueo nests! We are hoping and expecting to see some chicks soon! Here’s a sunset and female observed at nest 4, she hopped off for a quick stretch before disappearing like a #ghost in the grass to incubate!
