Everyone in Delhi does cycle , but just not the people you think.
Those rows of Hero and Atlas cycles you see? They’re not used by the “urban cycling movement.” They belong to guards, delivery boys, and housekeeping staff ; people who can’t afford ₹60 a day on buses or ₹120 on the metro.
At the other end are Lycra-clad professionals on imported bikes worth a month’s salary for the first group. Cycling for fitness and Sunday selfies.
The missing middle? The salaried Delhiite who’d rather pay ₹50 more for an auto or ₹100 for a cab than fry on tarmac at 44 °C with an AQI of 350.
Delhi’s heat index literally hit 51.9 °C this summer, and less than 12 % of the year is “comfortably breathable.”
So yes, Delhi has cycles. Just not many cyclists by choice.

Absolutely brilliant from @jatinsapru to invoke 'at the stroke of midnight, the Indian women's cricket team has made their own tryst with destiny'.
Tip of the hat for this broadcasting gem.

@akshaygn01 Not in DC anymore but I'd recommend Planet Word -- a museum on language, unique and very cool -- or the African American History and Culture museum. You could do the former in 1-2 ish hours, but the latter will take longer if you did the whole museum.
@GiveWell surveyors and reduce the surveyor's daily targets if it factored in work conditions into the calculations? Apologies for the accusatory tone but this sounds very basic, esp when the org provides some of the most generous benefits for its North Am / desk based roles.
No bathroom, food, nothing for a 9 hour shift, that too of grueling fieldwork by those with the least power, doesn't sound like a good thing. Def not something to encourage by being in awe of it. Surprised to see this from @GiveWell, one of the more thoughtful orgs...
How do surveyors hit 20 hh/day? They work hard. My first surveyor went 10am-7pm with zero breaks - no bathroom, food, nothing.
Only managed 18 hh because some had migrated. Had to get the village leader to confirm those people had actually moved (to show he wasn't shirking).
@GiveWell in the space. Are such shifts incentivized in GiveWell's work, including in its contractors' (and grantees') work? If not, and this is still happening, should there be systems put in place that prevent this from happening? e.g. surely GiveWell can afford to hire more...
Irresponsible reporting from @the_hindu@IndianExpress@bsindia & others about Indian being 4th equal country.
They compare India’s CONSUMPTION inequality Gini of 25.5 with INCOME inequality of other equal countries.
INCOME inequality of India is 62!

7 deaths per day. Almost 52,000 in the past 20 years.
If 7 people died a day in a plane crash, we'd move mountains to fix it.
But local trains carry working class passengers. Their lives are cheap. So we let it happen for 20 years, and we'll continue to do so for another 20
Ph.D. applications often hinge on access to information, and I benefited tremendously from the uchi predoc community and mentors.
If you’re applying for a predoc or Ph.D. in econ, public policy, sociology, or education/health, I’m happy to talk. Feel free to reach out!
And another thing:
5 hours 29 minutes of high octane play — and not a single toilet break, no tactical MTOs, no arguing with umpire to disrupt the opponent's rhythm, no hysterical yelling at own's box, no cheating (on the contrary, both corrected wrong calls made in their favor).
