Despite studies showing that police presence in the educational system is more harmful than helpful, there is an increasing amount of police in schools. Police presence turns school from a safe growth space to one enmeshed with the criminal justice system, breeding fear.
Studies show that schools with better mental health resources result in fewer suspensions and expulsions, and increase attendance and graduation rates. To make schools a safe space, police need to be replaced with professionals trained to work with young people.
Mass incarceration is a universal problem - nearly 12 million people are imprisoned globally & over half of all countries have overcrowded prisons. However, evidence shows that mass incarceration is not effective in reducing crime. So, what is happening?
