Militärs stecken sich mit Krätze an.
Krankenhäuser sind überlastet.
Diabetiker bekommen keine Insulin mehr, weil das Material ausgeht.
Tuberkulose, Hepatitis, Krätze - alles gleichzeitig.

Ein junger Mann (juannruiiz) vor Ort sagt:
Wenn du zu Hause zwei Kinder und zwei Teller Essen hast und plötzlich 80.000 Leute vor der Tür stehen, wem gibst du dann das Essen und die Medizin?

Genau das passiert jetzt in Ceuta.
Die eigenen Bürger werden im Stich gelassen.
Vergewaltigungen werden nicht angezeigt.
Schlägereien mitten am Tag.
Und die Behörden schauen zu.

Das ist der direkte Preis einer Politik, die Grenzen nicht schützt.

Nu, bara 49 dagar efter att kontraktet skrevs på, påbörjar den polska besättningen sin utbildning som pågår till början av 2028. 🇵🇱🇸🇪

A Polish man once told me something that sounded remarkably Dutch.

“You can take our country away, but apparently we just keep bringing it back.”

I laughed, but Poland's history makes the joke almost absurdly accurate.

For centuries Poland was one of Europe's great powers, joined with Lithuania in a Commonwealth stretching across an enormous part of the continent. Then its neighbours gradually partitioned it until, in 1795, Poland simply disappeared from the map.

For 123 years.

This seems like the sort of administrative inconvenience from which most countries would struggle to recover.

The Poles disagreed.

They preserved their language, Catholic traditions, literature, music and national identity while living under foreign empires. They rebelled repeatedly, sometimes with considerably more courage than realistic prospects of success, and in 1918 Poland returned.

Then came Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, occupation, unimaginable destruction and eventually decades of communist rule.

Still Poland remained Poland.

As a Dutchman, there is something about that stubbornness I deeply admire. Our histories are very different, but both peoples seem to possess the useful European characteristic of looking at terrible circumstances and saying:

“No.”

Followed by several centuries of paperwork, resistance and rebuilding.

Modern Poland sometimes feels underestimated in Western Europe. Yet travel there and you find magnificent cities, ancient traditions, strong families, beautiful churches and a people remarkably conscious of what their country cost their ancestors.

Perhaps that is why Polish patriotism feels different.

When your country has literally vanished from the map before, waving the flag doesn't seem particularly old-fashioned.

It seems like checking that it's still there.

And after everything Poland survived, I think they've earned the right to check occasionally.
