Without the free flow of ideas, even the ugly, the forbidden, the "objectionable"... even the horrible; society invariably turns into a totalitarian state.

Every fascist state, every communist dictatorship, every empire and kingdom gone wrong that led to mass deaths all started with good intentions of "protecting the minds of the innocent".

Free speech, as long as it's not illegal... it is the immune system of every open society. Once the machine of censorship becomes normalized, people start accepting the idea that certain thoughts and facts become too dangerous to be spoken... or even thought of.

They always start with things like pornography, heresy, hate, and other taboos... then they end up hamstringing the scientists, the artists, the intellectuals that keep the society's feet to the fire.

The "dark fiction" is essential so that we can stare into the abyss to know what actual evil is, how it tempts, and how it lies. Sunlight is always the best disinfectant. Drive the fictional taboos and uncomfortable ideas underground, and they don't die. They fester, recruit the broken, and become the forbidden fruit.

Censorship like this is the slow boil of the frog in the pot. We don't notice it at first, and then when it gets too hot, it's already too late, and we are "cooked". They call it "safety," "harm reduction," "community standards." Same mechanism, same fascism and totalitarianism, just new branding... the same gulags with a more compassionate name under DEI, equity, and inclusivity.

The moment you appoint a middle-aged karenocracy to decide which darkness we're allowed to explore, we are already on that path towards totalitarianism. This time, promoted by payment processors, advertisers, and it is GLOBAL... not just a single nation state.

These Karens are the mid-level bureaucrats at NGOs, HR departments, and “ethics boards” who are ignorant of history, but are dead certain they know "exactly" how society should be... Just like communism, those in power always want to try it again, and no matter how often the experiment is run, it always ends up in mass killings... The Holodomor, great leap forward, purges, cultural revolutions, killing fields...
