Imagine facing Europe’s best footballers with no boots on your feet, only courage in your heart. That was Sailen Manna.
From the dusty grounds of Howrah Union to becoming the face of Indian football’s golden era, Manna’s journey was built on discipline, loyalty, and pure love for the game.
In 1942, he joined Mohun Bagan and stayed for 19 years, reportedly earning just ₹19 in total. By day, he worked at the Geological Survey of India. By evening, he became a wall in defence for club and country.
Under his captaincy, India won its first Asian Games football gold in 1951. He also led India at the 1952 Olympics, where the barefoot Indian team stunned the world with its fearless football against France.
In 1953, the English FA named him among the world’s 10 best captains, a rare honour for an Asian footballer at the time. In 1971, India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his extraordinary contribution to football.
Long before Indian football searched for global respect, Sailen Manna had already earned it.
