Every day for the last 4 weeks I've shared a piece from an overlooked AI postphoto collection. People loved it so I thought I’d follow up with a post.
"90 Miles is a post-photography, A.I. reportage illustration experiment by MCB, curated by Blockbird, exploring historical events and realities of Cuban life that have, since 1961, motivated Cubans to cross the 90 miles of ocean separating Havana from Florida."
---
3 notable things about this collection:
1/ The ambition
MCB wasn’t around in 1961 but always wanted to interview people who were there.
Instead of inventing an alternate history stylised as retro futurism, he used AI to recreate the events of the Cuban Exodus. Obviously, I wasn’t there either but the pieces feel honest and true to life.
2/ The storytelling
MCB is an amazing photographer, so he does a great job of recreating the “man on the ground” photojournalism feel with AI.
Personally, I love the way he captures the despair and desperation of Havana, the determination and tragedy of the crossing and then the sense of hope and relief arriving in Miami, Florida.
2/ The aesthetic
If you look at early AI art from Kevin Abosch and Pete Burkeet there’s like a ‘OG stable diffusion’ aesthetic which is already feels nostalgic.
90 Miles has this too since it was released April 2023 on the 62nd Anniversary of the Cuban Exodus.
The crazy thing is I only own 2 pieces from the whole collection but I’m gassed on it and want more people to realise how overlooked it is.
Here’s some of my faves & link to collection at the end ↓
