Otis Redding died in a plane crash just three days after recording "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". Since he had not yet finished the lyrics, he ended up whistling the ending, and this whistling was in the official version. Steve Cropper completed the songwriting after his death.

Released as a single in January 1968, it was Otis' first and only single to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it spent four weeks at the top. The song won two posthumous Grammys and became one of the greatest classics in soul music.

In December, President Trump called for me to be investigated, arrested, and hanged over a 90-second video that restated existing law.

My lawyer's advice was straightforward: go quiet. Keep your head down. This will blow over.

But in this administration, the reality is that keeping your head down does not keep you safe. Staying quiet when power comes after you does not make the threat go away. It just teaches the people making the threat that it works.

When a president can call for the arrest and execution of a sitting senator for quoting the law, and the expected response is silence, that's a problem that goes way beyond me. That affects every American who works in government, every journalist, every ordinary citizen who might speak up.

A grand jury of ordinary Americans looked at this situation and said no. They understood what was at stake, and I think most Americans do.

We refuse to accept that this is the new normal.

This moment isn't really about me. When the administration is willing to go after a senator this way, it sends a message to every American who might speak up. That should concern people in both parties.

BREAKING: UNREPENTANT! Pete Hegseth accused of antisemitism by Jewish senator in hearing — and his response SHOCKS the room.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has often been accused of trying to force his own brand of Christian nationalism onto the members of America’s Armed Forces, initiating monthly Christian worship services in the Pentagon auditorium, embracing a far-right pastor who believes women shouldn’t vote, and declaring the war in Iran to be divinely blessed — while attacking Pope Leo who insists that Hegseth is far off the mark with that idea.

All this despite a First Amendment prohibiting the establishment of a state religion.

Pete Hegseth’s antipathy to every faith other than his own twisted version of Christianity was on sharp display today when the Defense Secretary went before the Senate Armed Services Committee and was confronted by a Jewish senator about his repeated use of a historically antisemitic slur against his critics.

Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), who is Jewish, did not mince words. "Pharisees. It's a problematic and historically weaponized term that casts Jewish communities as hypocritical or morally corrupt," she told Hegseth. "Words matter. It's a historically hurtful term. How do you justify using this language as Secretary of Defense?"

Hegseth's response was to explain why he thinks it's accurate: "I feel like it's a pretty accurate term for folks who don't see the plank in their own eye."

He stood by it. Completely. Without apology. While a Jewish senator explained to his face why the word has been used for centuries to demonize Jewish people.

Rosen's conclusion was unambiguous: "Sir, I cannot stand for that. That is wrong. It is not respectful to people, and I expect anyone who is in leadership in our country to be respectful and use respectful terms and not be an antisemite."

The Secretary of Defense of the United States was called an antisemite by a sitting U.S. Senator. In a Senate hearing. On camera.

This didn't come out of nowhere. Earlier this month, Hegseth stood at the Pentagon podium and compared Trump to Jesus while calling the media "Pharisees." He has invited a Christian nationalist pastor to preach at the Pentagon. He has repeatedly used religious rhetoric to defend Trump's unauthorized Iran war.

He is, by any measure, actively promoting a Christian nationalist ideology throughout the United States military — the institution constitutionally prohibited from establishing any religious test.

Active-duty Marines are calling his department the "Department of War Crimes." He fired the Army Chief of Staff in a one-minute phone call. He eliminated the flu shot mandate during a war. He has been hospitalized for stress-related issues while managing a shooting conflict. Internal documents contradict his public claims about the war's progress. His own vice president is quietly questioning whether he's been lying to the president.

And now a Jewish senator has called him an antisemite to his face, and Hegseth did absolutely nothing to disprove that contention. Instead, he stood by his words.

That’s why he needs to be removed from his position as soon as possible.
