“You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” was written by Pete Burns, Steve Coy, Wayne Hussey, Tim Lever and Mike Percy. Burns drew inspiration from Luther Vandross' “I Wanted Your Love” and Little Nell's “See You 'Round Like a Record,” combining those influences with his desire for a glittery, electronic disco sound. He pushed for the relatively unknown production team Stock Aitken Waterman to produce the track, helping create the distinctive techno-disco sound that became Dead or Alive's signature.

Released in November 1984 as the first single from Youthquake, “You Spin Me Round” initially received little enthusiasm from the band's record label. Burns later recalled taking out a £2,500 loan to help finance the recording. The song gradually climbed the UK Singles Chart and reached No. 1 after 17 weeks, becoming Dead or Alive's first UK No. 1 and Stock Aitken Waterman's first as producers. It also reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the US Dance chart. The song's dramatic string arrangement was based on Richard Wagner's “Ride of the Valkyries.”
