My MIL was very sick, Stage 4 cancer, needed to be admitted for a blood infection. Couldn’t find a bed in Edm, where she was for treatment, sent to a hospital outside Edmonton, she waited overnight in emerg until they could find a bed, she was sick, dying, in pain. The worst 1/2

It should come as no surprise that Ottawa is resisting any serious discussion of Alberta—and potentially Saskatchewan—leaving Confederation.
I work in resource extraction, with a particular focus on metals and minerals mining, and I follow industry developments closely. Recent assessments of Alberta’s lithium resources and Saskatchewan’s alumina resources are not speculative. They are documented, substantial, and commercially significant. Together with our established energy and fertilizer assets, they place both provinces in a position of unusual long-term advantage.
The scale of that endowment is worth stating plainly:
• Alberta holds one of the world’s largest oil and gas reserves. Canada’s proven oil reserves rank among the largest globally, and the overwhelming majority of those reserves are in Alberta.
• Alberta’s subsurface contains an estimated 82.5 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent in place—one of the largest known accumulations in the world.
• Saskatchewan’s Thor Project reports a measured and indicated resource of 49.5 billion tonnes of ore containing 6.8 billion tonnes of alumina.
• Saskatchewan is among the world’s leading uranium jurisdictions and is positioned to expand that role.
• Saskatchewan holds the world’s largest potash reserves.
Given that concentration of strategic resources, Ottawa’s interest in keeping things exactly as they are is not a mystery. The question for us is simpler: do we keep sending the value of what we produce east under the same rules, or do we take a greater share of that future into our own hands?

This fall’s referendum is the moment. Option 1 is the status quo.
Option 2 is a different course—one that puts Albertans first in the decisions that shape this province. Look at the resources. Look at the record. Then vote as if the next generation will live with the result. Because they will.
