Iran shoots down 1 plane in 37 days of getting the absolute shit kicked out of them.
One plane.
And look, credit where it’s due — that was their moment. Supreme Leader dead. Navy gone. Air defenses in rubble. The whole country watching. They finally got one. A real American F-15, two crew members ejected into their mountains, and the entire world waiting to see what happens next.
This was it. This was the hand they play. POW on Iranian soil. Negotiating leverage. Propaganda gold. They go on TV, parade the pilot, show the world the IRGC still has teeth.
That’s the movie they had in their heads.
Here’s what actually happened:
The CIA ran a disinformation campaign inside their own borders — convincing Iranian forces the pilot had already been found and was being moved — while simultaneously using “unique capabilities” to actually locate him inside a mountain crevice in southwest Iran.
SEAL Team 6 and the Night Stalkers then landed on Iranian soil.
Not near the border. Near Isfahan. The city with the nuclear facilities. The missile sites. The F-14 base.
They built a forward arming and refueling point on the ground inside Iran, in broad daylight, and spent 7 hours operating in Iranian airspace while IRGC forces were actively hunting an American.
There was a firefight. It went on for hours. In daylight. That almost never happens in special operations — you go in fast at night and you leave. These guys stayed.
On the way out, two MC-130J Commando IIs got stuck in the mud. $100M+ aircraft each. The kind of thing that ends careers, triggers congressional hearings, becomes a symbol of failure forever.
American commanders looked at the situation and decided they weren’t worth the hassle of recovering.
They blew them up, flew in replacement aircraft, and left.
Both airmen were home by Easter Sunday morning.
Iran’s state media called it “Tabas repeated” — a reference to Operation Eagle Claw in 1980, when America’s hostage rescue attempt ended in the Iranian desert with 8 dead Americans, zero rescued hostages, and a burning helicopter that became the defining image of American humiliation in Iran for a generation.
I’m Iranian-born. I know exactly what Tabas means to that government. They’ve been dining out on that moment for 45 years.
This is not Tabas.
Tabas didn’t end with the president posting “WE GOT HIM” on Easter morning.
Tabas didn’t end with SEAL Team 6 walking out of Isfahan.
Tabas didn’t end with America casually destroying $200M in aircraft because they simply did not feel like dealing with it.
The IRGC built its entire identity on being the unbowed resistance. The force that humbled the Great Satan. The reason Iran punches above its weight in every proxy war from Yemen to Lebanon.
37 days in, their supreme leader is dead, their navy is at the bottom of the sea, and when they finally got their moment — the one chance to show the world they still matter — we walked into their backyard, took our guys back, blew up our own planes just because we could, and were home in time for church.
That’s not a military defeat.
That’s an identity crisis.

They did manage to escape. But wow when I was younger, this was such an eye-opener of the evil that happens in our world.
