🇮🇳 🇺🇸 More Than 1,000 Americans Call on U.S. to Deny Visa to Hindu Nationalist Leader

More than 1,000 people across the United States have urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to deny or revoke a visa for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat ahead of his scheduled August 29 appearance at Madison Square Garden, according to the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC).

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom recommended visa restrictions and asset freezes targeting RSS leaders in March, citing the Hindu nationalist organization’s involvement in “acts of extreme violence and intolerance” against religious minorities. Bhagwat was also the RSS general secretary during the 2002 Gujarat massacres. Human Rights Watch named the RSS among the groups “most directly responsible” for the anti-Muslim violence, which killed some 2,000 people.

“Mohan Bhagwat does not represent Indian Americans, and Madison Square Garden should not present him as though he does,” IAMC President Mohammed Jawad said. The group is also asking the venue to cancel the event and New York officials to condemn it.

IAMC is asking the @StateDept to deny or revoke Bhagwat’s visa; asking @TheGarden and Executive Chairman James L. Dolan to cancel the event; and asking @NYCMayor, @GovKathyHochul, and @NYCCouncil to publicly condemn the use of a New York venue as a platform for hate.

I don’t want to sound like a broken record on this but can you imagine if a top adviser to, and ally of, President Joe Biden had said this? It would be the *only* story in America. For days and weeks on end. Biden and Dem members of Congress would be asked about nothing else by rightly outraged reporters.

So every American political reporter, editor, anchor, executive producer, reading this right now: ask yourself, why aren’t you as outraged when it’s Muslims not Jews, and Trump’s ally not Biden’s?

NEW: Journalist Sam Husseini announced today that he is running for Congress in Maryland’s 4th District as the Green Party nominee, challenging Democratic Rep. Glenn Ivey in November.

The Palestinian-Jordanian-American Husseini is a senior analyst at the Institute for Public Accuracy, and has repeatedly confronted U.S. officials over their complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Security removed him from Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s final State Department briefing in January 2025. Last month, he was ejected from a National Press Club event after confronting Chuck Schumer.

Husseini has branded the incumbent “AIPAC Ivey” over his support from the pro-Israel lobby and for U.S. military aid to Israel as it carries out a genocide.

When Will Sanjiv Bhatt Get Justice?

This is one of the saddest chapters of our history. An honest, brave and dedicated IPS officer, Sanjiv Bhatt, has been in jail for more than nine years.

He became a symbol of courage because he stood by his principles and spoke against injustice. Many IPS officers have come and gone, but Sanjiv Bhatt is still remembered for his courage and his fight for truth.

Whether one agrees with him or not, every person deserves a fair and just legal process. His case should not be forgotten.

It is time for justice-loving people and the Gen Z generation to raise this issue, ask questions and demand justice through peaceful and democratic means.

We salute Sanjiv Bhatt for his courage and pray for his safety, justice and early release.
