Random chitchat with my mom about a friend’s wedding in Port Harcourt and she reminded me how she - Yoruba girl born in Port Harcourt with her first language being Igbo fled with her parents and siblings at the start of the civil war with nothing they owned.
They survived the trip down to Lagos by road in part because my grandma - who had grown up in the North and spoke Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba - consistently code-switched based on whoever they met at different points on the journey.
