Exim Bank Tanzania, one of the country’s Top 5 biggest banks by assets, announced the completion of its acquisition of Canara Bank Tanzania Limited today.

In the deal, which has been approved by the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Exim Bank has acquired all the assets and liabilities of the Tanzanian unit of the Indian state-owned bank.

"This milestone marks Exim Bank’s third acquisition in the past six years, further solidifying its role as a key player in the Tanzanian banking industry," Exim Bank said in a statement.

Exim's expansion drive started a decade ago with the acquisition and turnaround of a bank in Uganda, followed by the acquisition of UBL Bank Tanzania in 2019, FNB Bank Tanzania in 2022, and now Canara Bank Tanzania.

Jaffari Matundu, CEO of Exim Bank, said the latest acquisition is a testament to the bank's commitment to provide innovative financial solutions and service.

“This acquisition is a strategic step forward in our journey to redefine banking in Tanzania and the region. Together, we will continue to innovate, grow, and deliver impactful solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers and contribute to sustainable economic development,” he said.

As of December 31, 2024, Exim Bank's total assets stood at TZS 3.1 trillion, with TZS 2.5 trillion in customer deposits.

The bank's loan book hit TZS 1.8 trillion by the end of last year.

The BoT is encouraging consolidation of Tanzania’s banking sector through mergers and acquisitions to safeguard the stability of the financial industry.
