It has become fashionable in some policy circles to frame Somalia’s story as one of endless failure, a country perpetually unable to take ownership of its security, rebuild its institutions, or govern itself effectively. That narrative is not only incomplete; it is unfair.
Consider what Somalia has actually attempted over the past four years. Under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Federal Government has pursued three of the most difficult tasks any fragile state can undertake: fighting an entrenched terrorist insurgency, rebuilding national security forces, and advancing a constitutional review process that is essential for legitimate elections and functional statehood. No serious student of post-conflict reconstruction would describe even one of these tasks as easy. Somalia has been attempting all three at once, under fire, and with shrinking resources.
President @HassanSMohamud joined our citizens gathered for the national celebrations ahead of National Independence and Unity Day.
Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, the President commended the unity, solidarity, and peaceful spirit demonstrated by our youth. He noted that such unity and social cohesion are essential to safeguarding Somalia’s stability and advancing national development.
He further called on all Somalis to “unite our minds, our strength, and our collective resolve to safeguard our hard-earned gains and together achieve the lasting prosperity we aspire to.”
The Somali flag has been raised. It is officially 1 July, the day Somalia's southern regions gained their independence and the Somali nation unified as one. 66 years on, the flag still rises.Happy Independence and Unification Day to every Somali, at home and across the world.

President of the Federal Republic of Somalia H.E. @HassanSMohamud has joined thousands of Mogadishu residents at Taleeh Junction to mark 1 July, the anniversary of Somalia's southern independence and the historic unification of the Somali nation.
The President's presence among the public at one of the capital's most iconic gathering points reflects the spirit of a day that belongs not to ceremony halls but to the streets and the people who fill them.

A large-scale celebration is taking shape across the streets of Mogadishu ahead of 1 July, the day marking Somalia's southern independence and the historic unification of the nation. Thousands have already gathered at Taleex Junction in the capital to begin the festivities. The occasion continues the momentum of Independence Week, which began with the 26 June celebrations marking the day of the national flag and the union with the northern regions.

Somalia’s independence and unity were secured through a long struggle, sacrifice and the courage of Somali heroes who united to liberate their homeland. Today, that struggle continues as the nation defends its sovereignty and works to eliminate the Al-Shabaab Khawaarij terrorist group, whose violence remains a threat to Somalia’s peace, statehood and development.
Grade 12 graduates rode through the streets of Mogadishu in Somali National Army vehicles on Thursday, cheering and waving the national flag as the military turned the city into a stage for their celebration.
For many of the students, the ride through the capital marked the first time they had seen the city's streets from the back of a military truck, a moment that will be hard to forget on the eve of Somalia's 66th Independence Day.

Press Statemet: The Federal Republic of Somalia rejects any engagement with entities operating outside its constitutional framework. Any such actions violate Somalia’s sovereignty, unity & territorial integrity, carry no legal standing, and undermine regional stability. #Somalia
I am sharing an article I wrote on the growing debate over Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.
This is about understanding how we arrived at this critical moment. Who paved the way? Who bears responsibility? Who should be held accountable? And, most importantly, what can be done now?
Rather than reacting with emotions alone, we must confront the realities that brought us here, learn from our mistakes, and chart a path forward that protects Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and future.

My beloved people of Somalia,
Today marks a special moment in our nation's journey and in my own life of public service.
As we celebrate four years since the formation of the DanQaran Government, I am deeply humbled by the trust that the Somali people have placed in us and by the opportunity to serve our beloved nation. This day, 15 June 2026, also carries a historic significance.
By completing four full years in office since my appointment, I have become the longest-serving Prime Minister in the history of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
I receive this milestone not as a personal achievement, but as a testament to the growing maturity, stability, and resilience of our democratic institutions.
The true achievement is not the length of service, but what that service has delivered for the people of Somalia.
Four years ago, when President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud entrusted me with the responsibility of leading the government, we committed ourselves to a simple but profound mission: to serve the Somali people and advance the national interest.
Together, we set out to strengthen our institutions, improve security, expand public services, create opportunities for our youth, empower women, rebuild infrastructure, and restore Somalia's place in the region and the world. Today, we can proudly say that Somalia has made meaningful progress.
We witnessed historic debt relief that unlocked new opportunities for economic growth.
We secured the lifting of the decades-long arms embargo. Somalia joined the East African Community and took its seat on the United Nations Security Council. We expanded education, recruited thousands of teachers, strengthened healthcare services, modernised government systems, advanced digital identification, improved infrastructure, and expanded support for vulnerable communities.
These accomplishments belong to every Somali citizen.
They belong to the soldier defending our nation.
They belong to the teacher shaping our future.
They belong to the farmer, the fisherman, the entrepreneur, the civil servant, the mother raising her family, and the young person striving to build a better tomorrow.
As we approach the 66th anniversary of our independence, we are reminded that nation-building is not measured in years alone. It is measured in the lives we improve, the opportunities we create, and the hope we inspire.
Our work is not finished.
There are still challenges before us. There are still dreams waiting to be fulfilled. There are still communities that need greater opportunity and development.
But I remain confident because I have seen the strength of the Somali people.
I have seen a nation that refuses to give up.
I have seen citizens who continue to believe in a better future.
I have seen a Somalia that is rising.
I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to H.E President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for his leadership and partnership, to the Council of Ministers, members of Parliament, regional leaders, civil servants, security forces, development partners, and most importantly, the people of Somalia.
Thank you for your trust.
Thank you for your support.
Thank you for allowing me the honour of serving our nation during this historic chapter.
The road ahead remains long, but our destination is clear: a peaceful, prosperous, democratic, and united Somalia.
Together, we have made history.
May Allah bless the Federal Republic of Somalia and its people.
Thank you.
