The government must find creative ways to generate revenue. The housing situation in Lagos is alarming. The Lagos State Government has built over 11,000 housing units across the state, with more currently under construction. Unfortunately, many of these homes remain unoccupied because many Nigerians simply cannot afford them.

The government could introduce a rent-to-own scheme where Lagosians who can afford moderate payments can rent these homes. For example, rent could start from ₦2 million per year up to ₦4 million, depending on the number of rooms. Payments could then be spread out over several years through a structured rent-to-own program.

Once the payment period is completed, the house becomes the tenant’s property. This approach would allow many people to secure housing while also giving them the assurance that they will eventually become homeowners.
