@FuSchmu@qikipedia Good luck with that. I spent ages trying to source Qikiipedia 'facts' in the hope it would shame them into it but it never did.
(I would still like to know how the Inca's measured time with potatoes)
@ilan_peer@qikipedia They might be pulling that from https://t.co/92OndkQuCj
(I've actually been in an anechoic chamber so can personally attest that you can certainly hear your heart beat)
One of the weird things to explain to an early Internet person would've been the way it becomes almost impossible to research something online once it becomes a factoid. Somewhere out there is a fact about sex in ancient Carthage waiting to be detached from context and listicled.
@ilan_peer@p7r@qikipedia I think they're right on this one. Lots of sources. https://t.co/bXw1nKaUaT for example. It comes down to the white stripes being due to an absence of melanin rather than an actual pigment. Zebras also have black skin under all that hair apparently.
@qikipedia Since I happened to notice this one. Nope, that was James Ussher. John Lightfoot went for 3929 BC. https://t.co/00QYM9fyPB has all his calculations.
@fiddleback Still got the account but not really got the time to try and keep up with Qikipedia. Trying to reverse engineer their sources is almost harder than just conjuring 'facts' out of the air in the first place.
I had hoped they'd start doing it themselves..
@qikipedia Can't find this specific study. I did find https://t.co/r7hpsAEIjH which demonstrated a similar effect (*in men only it should be noted*) from looking at red/blue lights on a screen.
The suggestion is red lights increased arousal/reaction times and so perception of duration.
@qikipedia I'm dubious. Attributed in lots of places but no original sources. There is a translation of a letter to Benedetto Varchi (https://t.co/Ep3itHDRZv) quoted in https://t.co/aO6tXZmfGP which has
"The sculpture arrives at his end by taking away what is superfluous" which is close?
Got this one;
Whoever consults, combines, confederates, or corresponds with any pirate or robber upon the seas...Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
18 U.S. Code § 1657 - Corruption of seamen and confederating with pirates
Scholars in the Middle Ages popped the ‘b’ into the word debt because of its Latin origins (debitum), despite the fact that it came to English from the French word dette and was never pronounced. They same applies to doubt, plumber, subtle, indict and island.
@qikipedia https://t.co/zBlznL6YZB has some details of the bonnacon, as well as an alternative translation which might counter the "sealions have the smelliest farts" claim.
Peeing in the pool can produce trichloramine and cyanogen chloride which are both harmful to heath (https://t.co/VHDX0iCDls)
https://t.co/jtndyoidEo looked at whether it's likely to hurt you realistically though (tldr; probably not)
(and no, there isn't a way of seeing it)
There's a video of the surgery where they discuss the reasons for it at https://t.co/36pfIcK9TQ
(personally I'd stick with their latest video of Sea Otters eating ice-pops though https://t.co/ptuQr7CHUi)
