Let me tell you what happened in Leicester Square tonight, because it was better than the film.

The Princess of Wales has not walked a red carpet since May 2022. In between came the year the family does not discuss: the surgery, the diagnosis, the video from the garden bench, the chemotherapy, the months when the country quietly counted the days. Tonight she walked one again.

She wore purple. Deep plum, Jenny Packham, cut lower than she has ever dared, the colour of queens. Her hair was half up, so that you could see the earrings, and the earrings were Diana's pearls. At her throat, on a rope of pearls to the waist, hung an amethyst heart the size of a walnut. Queen Alexandra gave it to the Queen Mother in 1923, the year she married into the family. It has been worn through a war, an abdication and a century of clever men underestimating the women who wore it.

This morning a book went on sale calling that Queen petty and the King a lottery winner on the morning Diana died. The family's reply to a week of it has been one sentence. Tonight the future Queen answered without one: she wore the Queen Mother's heart and Diana's pearls at the same time, and let the flashbulbs do the talking.

And William. Black tie, half a step behind her on the carpet, in her light rather than his own, with the look of a man who walked behind a coffin at fifteen and has spent every year since making sure she would never be alone on a carpet, or in a hospital, or anywhere.

She looked magnificent. Not because of the dress, though it was perfect, and not because of the necklace, though it was a hundred years of the family on a single strand. She looked magnificent because she looked well, and happy, and unafraid.

The book will be in the bargain bins by Christmas. The amethyst goes back to the vault, until another woman wears it on another night for reasons nobody will need to explain. That is the difference between a family and a grievance. One of them lasts.

She did not cut her father off because of this. The dates don't allow it. The break came in May 2018, the week of the wedding, over the staged photos and the interviews. That is what she told the Mail on Sunday case in her own letter that August, and what she told Oprah in 2021. Her statement today says the police letter came 'in 2018' and was shared with her afterwards. After the wedding. After the break. Whatever that letter was, it did not cause the estrangement. It arrived into one that already existed. The statement is written to let you believe otherwise. The sequence won't let you.

Then the eight years. By her own account she was shown an allegation of this kind in 2018 and was 'assured' it would be investigated. The Met has no reach into Mexico. She had lawyers who sued half of Fleet Street in that time. Not a sentence in today's statement says she ever asked what became of it. Her half-brother, the one her side has spent years dismissing, found the boxes in July and went to the police the same month. She had a letter for eight years and, as far as anyone can tell, let it lie.

So much for the champion of children. So much for 'speaking out.' The woman who found her voice on every subject from the Palace to the press to jam went quiet on the one that mattered, and only found it again this morning, in a statement to the Sun, on the day it did her the most good.

I'll say what her fans won't. Today is a bad day for Meghan, and the deflection makes it worse. Nobody owes her an apology for the last eight years, because for eight years she told us the reason was the photos, and we believed her.

Her father denies everything and hasn't been charged. The investigation will presumably want to see the 2018 letter and hear what she was told, and she should hand over both without being asked.

I'm disappointed. Not surprised. Disappointed.
