Gregg Popovich is a Legend.
He has won five NBA Championships and has been coaching the Spurs for 28 years!
It's unheard of in professional sports today.
Here are 10 Insights into the Greatness of "Pop."
1: TEAM - "It’s not about any one person. You’ve got to get over yourself and realize that it takes a group to get this thing done."
Coach Pop is all about TEAM. His entire focus is WE > ME. Selfish play or selfish thought is not allowed.
2: ADVERSITY - "The measure of who we are is how we react to something that doesn’t go our way."
How you handle adversity is the accurate measure of a person's character. This is what TEAM Sports is all about. Coach Pop teaches life skills, even in the NBA.
3: TRUST - "I can’t make every decision for you. I don’t have 14 timeouts. You guys got to get together and talk."
Coach Pop teaches his guys how to play, react, and adapt. He lets them take the lead in huddles and asks for their opinions, which earns him trust.
4: ROLES - "We believe in people executing their role and caring about the team more than anything individually."
Coach Pop talks about Role Definition all the time. He clearly defines these roles for his players, and his players know and excel in their roles.
5: SIMPLICITY - "Basketball is a pretty simple game. What wins is consistency and competitiveness."
Less is more. Simple wins. Coach Pop knows this. He applies it to his teams, and they consistently win.
6: UNSELFISHNESS - "No one is bigger than the team. If you can’t do things our way, you’re not getting time here, and we don’t care who you are."
Coach Pop does not tolerate selfish players. Players who do not buy into the TEAM concept don't last. It is a top priority.
7: PRACTICALITY - "I try not to get impressed. I just try to look at what I see."
Coach Pop lives in the moment. He is practical and reasonable in his approach. He has seen a lot and lives in the present.
8: WISDOM - "The older you get, the more you try to appreciate what you’ve accomplished."
Great Wisdom from Coach Pop. He realizes how hard it is to win. Live in the moment and appreciate the memories that they provide. You never know if you will get them back.
9: THE PRESENT - "I’m not too interested in talking about the past. It doesn’t do us any good whatsoever."
Learn from the past, but live in the moment. Coach Pop is always looking ahead to the next game or practice. Get better each day.
10: DO RIGHT - "It’s never been my goal to be king of the prom. It’s my goal to do the right thing and get the job done."
Simple Man with a simple plan. Do what is right. Play the right way. Be consistent. No need for the limelight.

This is a cool share from Rick Tocchet folowing last nights thrilling comeback on how the coordinated playoff hoodies for his team and let his players choose the word that best defined them.
Couple of lessons here...
1) Players, regardless of age or level, appreciate celebrating a milestone..ie winning the Pacific Division pennant and qualifying for the NHL playoffs. Team hoodies is one way to do it. This create a sense of a Right of Passage or ceremony to mark the occasion. Green light for coaches to get creative.
2) Ask for feedback from your players. Involving players in the decision making process, again regardless of their age or level, let's them know they truly have equity in the team or program.
3) Fun matters. At all levels. I believe that a coach who goes out his way to keep things fun, while still holding players accountable and setting a high standard, is rewarded with players willing to go the extra mile. In a nutshell, this is the art of coaching.

I find myself always asking these three questions.
- What are the most successful teams made of?
- What makes a great coach?
- Why do teams WIN?
In 2021, Lewis Caralla, Strength Coach at Georgia Tech, gave this phenomenal speech about winning.
He said, "Are you willing to sprint when the distance is unknown?"
Do you chase Winning?
Here are the 3 takeaways from his speech:
1. Winning is NOT Fair - Winning is not loyal, and it does not promise you anything. Winning is not fair. You can put all of the time and work into it and still come up short.
2. Winning does NOT Care - Winning does not care about you. It can create a fear of failure, add stress and undue pressure, and play mental games with our heads. Winning causes setbacks and does not promise you anything.
3. So...Why do we Chase Winning? We chase winning for one reason and one reason only. The only thing that is guaranteed in life if you do not chase winning is the alternative. Losing...and losing is much worse!
Winning is a lifestyle.
It is our day-to-day choices on how we live our lives.
I know what I choose.
Choose wisely.
Team Chemistry is a Difference Maker.
Knicks great Dave DeBusschere said, "The best teams have chemistry. They communicate with each other, and they sacrifice personal glory for the common goal."
How do you develop Team Chemistry?
Here are the 5 C's of Team Chemistry
1. Communication
Effective communication is the cornerstone of team chemistry. Open, honest, and clear communication helps resolve conflicts, set expectations, and create an environment where team members feel valued and heard. Team leaders must encourage feedback and maintain transparency, creating a culture of trust where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas.
2. Culture
Culture WINS. Team culture is the shared values, beliefs, norms, and practices that shape how a team operates and interacts. Culture is every day. It’s about creating an environment where clear standards and expectations are upheld by teammates. This accountability creates chemistry.
3. Commitment
Commitment matters. It's about showing up, both physically and mentally, and putting in the effort needed to succeed. A committed teammate is accountable to the team. Commitment builds trust, and trust builds chemistry.
4. Collaboration
Collaboration is about working together to achieve a common goal. It is about WE > ME. It’s built on the foundation of mutual respect and trust, where every teammate's contribution is valued and recognized. Collaboration with a team is about knowing and accepting your role on the team and making sure those roles fit together.
5. Celebration
Celebration is about recognizing and appreciating the team's achievements and milestones. It builds morale, motivation, and a sense of unity in a team. Celebrating successes, no matter how small, reinforces the value of hard work and teamwork.

KIDS: When players on a team care about each other, winning cultures thrive. A lot of that culture is built off the ice with relationships, but it's also really built on the ice with buy in, sticking up for each other, and unselfish play.
This unselfish play here from Artemi Panarin shows why he is one of the most popular teammates in the league.
It's a small thing, but worth the weight of gold in the locker room.
In a league where goals are at a premium, and goals equal dollars, Panarin has a clear open net for the goal but chooses to pass it to Kreider.
And yes, one can argue that he should've shot it in a one-goal game. But I still love it.
When top players are unselfish, that goes such a long way for setting the tone for the team's culture. The Rangers are only one point back from the top of the league, and as small as a play as this is, it's probably a big reason why.
I'm also a believer in the Hockey Gods. Because what happens on the following shift...Panarin gets the puck and scores another empty netter.
Awesome.
Coaches, this is a great clip to show your team and especially your top players.
Great job by Artemi Panarin!!

"Leadership is Lonely — If you are going to be a leader, you are not going to please everybody. You have to hold people accountable. Even if you have that moment of being uncomfortable."
