@steady_drumbeat@shadowstrophe@annakhachiyan I don't disagree they weren't assimilating. It's just a very hard process that takes decades. Again it also helps they're from similar backgrounds.
@steady_drumbeat@shadowstrophe@annakhachiyan Assimilation was not easy at at all. 30% of them returned home and we had to implement a large moratorium on immigration for several decades. You also have to consider the notion that those immigrants were also from similar religious and ethnic backgrounds (White, Christian).
@steady_drumbeat@annakhachiyan Insofar as those ill-liberal people remain a minority. If they become a majority, the machine no longer has the societal pressures to impart those liberal beliefs on the new people.
@PerkyLimeMan@shadowstrophe@steady_drumbeat@annakhachiyan Its self defeating to support living among people who dont support the 1st amendment. Eventually you will have to deal with the consequences of living among a populace that does not value the 1st.
@steady_drumbeat@annakhachiyan You sound very certain like you know. Then explain how you would avoid imprisonment for your "wrong speech" when you are surrounded by a polity that expresses no support for such rights. Does George Washington manifest out of the ether and simply deny your jailing?
@steady_drumbeat@annakhachiyan If you have a majority of people who no longer support the 1st, you will eventually no longer have the 1st. You need to remove the bad actors if you wish to keep it. This is the point of the OP.
@steady_drumbeat@annakhachiyan Americans? If you assume we are a creedal nation then being against the first amendment is inherently un-american and thus they should be removed.
@r_b_t_r@AuronMacintyre@BWLH_ Not exactly. A significant portion of them returned home. We also enacted a multi-decade restriction on immigration after they struggled to assimilate.
