There’s a lot of work to do.

📋 FINDING 3⃣ –
Districts and schools rapidly escalate disciplinary responses to force dress code compliance, threatening students with detention, suspension, removal to Alternate Learning Centers, and even referrals to court.
📋 FINDING 2⃣ –
These codes empower school staff to make decisions about what they think is “inappropriate.” Adults then use the justification that certain clothing + appearance is “disruptive” to learning... in order to then disrupt the learning of the students they target.
📋 FINDING 1⃣ –
Overwhelmingly, these dress codes prohibited clothing that school staff say is "too revealing” or “immodest,” with specific bans on spaghetti straps and tube tops, and a wide range of meticulous rules for “acceptable” lengths of dresses, skirts, and shorts.
Nothing “distracting,” “indecent,” or “risquè.”
No “headwraps,” “large purses,” or “make-up.”
We audited student dress codes across the state of New York and those are but a few of the absurd rules we found.
