Yesterday, I had the honour of delivering the keynote address at the World Oceans Day 2025 celebration held at AMA Omanye Aba Hall in Accra.

The event brought together voices from government, academia, NGOs, the private sector and students to reflect on our shared duty to protect and restore Ghana’s marine ecosystems. I reminded participants that the health of our oceans is directly tied to our climate, food security, livelihoods and national development.

As Acting CEO of the Environmental Protection Authority, I see ocean protection not as a campaign, but as a national responsibility. The EPA is committed to leading this agenda through science-driven policies, community engagement and strict enforcement to preserve marine life and coastal resilience.

In motion this week, I had the chance to meet with communities, media, and mining companies in the Eastern Region to talk about something that affects us all and our environment.

On radio platforms like @GBCSunrise106.7 and Swift FM, I shared why protecting our land, water, and air isn't just the EPA’s job, it’s everyone’s responsibility. From illegal mining and plastic waste to noise and deforestation, we all have a part to play.

I visited mining sites to see how companies are managing land reclamation, tailings, and waste. While there’s progress, we must go beyond doing the minimum. Real responsibility means putting the environment and people first.

We’re not just enforcing laws. We’re building awareness, encouraging action, and reminding Ghanaians that environmental protection is about legacy. It’s about the future we leave behind.

This week, I began a week-long working tour in the Eastern Region as part of EPA’s commitment to deepening our regional presence, strengthening environmental compliance, and promoting sustainability across key sectors.

On Day 1, I visited Fairafric Company Limited, a chocolate-producing company, to assess environmental compliance and encourage sustainable practices. It was encouraging to see their efforts toward greener production.

I also inspected quarry sites in Nsawam-Adoagyiri, focusing on dust emissions and waste management—key areas of concern for environmental health and public safety.

Additionally, I paid a courtesy call on the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Nsawam-Adoagyiri. We had fruitful discussions on collaboration between local authorities and the EPA in advancing environmental protection and sustainable development in the municipality.

At the Inter-Agency Dialogue hosted at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel, I joined a collective of government leaders, CEOs, and stakeholders to reaffirm EPA’s commitment to sustainable development and investment facilitation.

I assured the gathering that EPA will expedite environmental permitting processes for the Petroleum Hub project in Jomoro, recognizing its strategic importance to Ghana’s energy future.

We also announced plans to strengthen our Ellembele Office with additional staff and logistics to support timely approvals and efficient oversight.

With strong collaboration between EPA and the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), we aim to ensure environmental standards are upheld while creating a seamless experience for investors.

Last night, I joined Joy News @JoyNewsOnTV to discuss Ghana’s illegal mining crisis (galamsey), which has become more than just an environmental issue, it is a national emergency threatening our water bodies, forests, public health, and national security.

1. State of Emergency Needed – Immediate action is required to halt destruction and accelerate efforts to clean up our contaminated rivers. Without urgent intervention, the damage will be irreversible.

Standing in solidarity with the resilient communities of Ketu South, who have been severely impacted by recent tidal waves. Yesterday, I joined President John Dramani Mahama, Hon. Murtala Mohammed, and other leaders on a visit to assess the damage, engage with affected residents, and discuss sustainable solutions to prevent future devastation.

Before the President’s arrival, I toured the affected areas with Ibrahim Mahama to witness firsthand the extent of destruction and the urgent need for intervention. The loss of homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure highlights the pressing need for long-term measures to safeguard coastal communities.

As part of the immediate response, President Mahama has assured that the sea defense project will be captured in the upcoming national budget, with immediate action set to commence on its construction. This intervention is crucial to protecting these communities from further displacement and ensuring their safety in the face of climate change and rising sea levels.
