A friend recently asked me which digital payments app I was using.

When I told her, she promptly asked, “Why not use BHIM, our very own Indian app?”

I admitted I didn’t know much about it.

“Well, let me introduce you to someone you’ll enjoy meeting.”

That someone was Dilip Asbe, MD & CEO of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Dilip kindly agreed to come over for a chat.

That conversation was illuminating, to put it mildly.

We all know the payment apps we use every day. PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM…

But think of them as trains running on a railway network.

NPCI provides the tracks.

And what an extraordinary railway India has built!

In September, UPI alone processed over 2,400 crore transactions. That’s more than 80 crore transactions every single day!

India is now the world’s largest real-time payments market. A true global force multiplier.

And Dilip has been one of the key people behind that remarkable achievement.

His mind is buzzing with plans to build more ‘railroads’ that will enable new apps in wider financial spheres.

But here’s what struck me most about him.

Not the scale of his achievement. Not his knowledge of the technology.

His humility.

Dilip is well known in financial & technology circles. But I met a man with no airs, no sense of self-importance & seemingly little interest in the spotlight.

Just immense pride in what his team has accomplished & a genuine sense of privilege at being able to serve his country.

I also learned that his mother was a teacher.

Perhaps I’m biased, but I’ve always believed that mothers who are teachers have a special knack for instilling values that last a lifetime. And I couldn’t help wondering if that explained something about Dilip’s grounded personality.

People like him derive their satisfaction not from being seen, but from seeing their work make a difference.

Thank you, Dilip, for the conversation. And for reminding me that ambition & humility can indeed travel together on the railroad to success.

But of course an egg attack on a TMC leader suddenly shakes the soul of democracy.

But the blood, tears and terror of ordinary Bengal victims from 2021 did not produce the same moral thunder.

If you are ashamed of India, resign from the parliament.

If not, spare us the theatre.

Claude Code just created a fairly complex set of functions (spanning over 6 files) to:

1. let users upload a custom python function (as a string) from HTTP endpoints
2. save them in a DB
3. use them in agentic LLM tasks

It got this right after 3 shots (I just had to keep prompting it out of doom loops). Created new DB tables, tests, new routes, helper functions.

Everything you could ask from a seasoned senior developer. Cost me $1.01, took Claude 5m54s of API calls, and 38mins of wall time (mostly prompting out of doom loops)

Amazing. The software industry (and recurring subscription based business models) are going to change so much this year.

Performance
SQLCoder-8b-pro significantly exceeds the performance of our previous sqlcoder-8b model on Postgres text-to-SQL (from 88.2% to 90.2% accuracy - gpt-4o is at 87.6%, for reference). It is also better at following instructions.

This was done via self-merges, hand crafted fine-tuning data, and adapting the training data to fit our tokenizer.

Cost
You can host this on the model on a single $3,500 RTX4090, and support ~5 requests/second via VLLM.

If you're looking to host on the cloud instead, you can run it on a single L4 GPU that costs $300/mo on GCP

Repeatability
We have a dense 8b model with no MoE shenanigans. For the same prompt with temperature=0, you'll always get the same answer – which is critical in BI.

Teachable
In our alignment and feedback modes, you can give the model feedback on how it answered certain questions, and it will automatically adapt to the feedback.

Debuggable
You can use logprobs and attention scores to determine where, exactly is the model paying attention to inside a prompt + what it's getting confused by when generating outputs.
