A healthy relationship will test you more than a toxic one. Because it won't let you run. It holds up a mirror and says: Show up. Communicate. Grow. Swallow the pride. It's a repeated choice to stay and work at it together. Even when it's hard and ugly. That's why real love scares people so much in this generation.
in order to become a better person, you must first realize how horrible you really are. not in the dramatic sense, but in the quiet ways you sabotage yourself, repeat unhealthy patterns, hurt people who care about you, or tolerate what wounds you. you cannot grow if you keep pretending you’re innocent in the story you’ve created.
@tenobrus@tszzl@airkatakana really suspecting that alignment maps onto the halting problem, or is at least NP-hard. maybe even the "wrong question" level. it sucks but "extinction" is lower on the tech tree than "cure cancer".
a lot lower.
this scene was incredible because it was so clear that THIS is what he had really been afraid of. this is why he never told her and why he isolated himself from his loved ones. he was scared to hear that they don’t care about him anymore
fun fact: because dopamine bursts are actually more about being surprised by pleasure than pleasure itself, you can keep wanting someone long after your brain has already concluded you don't even like them.
here’s how/why:
when a good thing happens unexpectedly, the dopamine burst occurs on the reward, but once your brain figures out that there’s an earlier cue that predicts the good thing, the burst moves backward onto the cue. this is how you end up getting the neurochemical hit from the typing bubble or message notification and not the actual text message.
so this obv has some dark / dangerous implications for relationships,
by which i mean the person who likes you consistently will probably make you happier in the long term, BUT the person who likes you intermittently will likely keep you wanting them - happiness & desire are totally different neural computations.
the grim lesson here is that if you wanna maximize someone’s appetite for you, you need to minimize their resolution of the relationship. they probably need to care above some threshold for it to work at all, but this is why you are caught up on your situationship.
i did NOT write this post as advice btw. I don’t do this or anything manipulative intentionally bc I’d rather build relationships on healthy foundations etc etc
but glhf out there
