I used to be on this platform, but not since ~late 2024. Keeping the handle though. Theoretical Physicist working on all things quantum. Enjoyer of penguins.
Stability of emergent time periodicity in a few-body interacting system
https://t.co/CRyBPBoBbA
We examine the onset and resilience of emergent #timeperiodicity in a few-body all-to-all interacting Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick #manybody model, where one of the constituents is locally in contact with a thermal bath. Employing both a #collisionmodelframework and a suitable #timecontinuousdescription, we show that stable time-periodic behavior can only be exhibited when the bath acts as a purely #dissipative channel.
We assess the role that the microscopic interactions within the system play, establishing that for the all-to-all model the introduction of temperature leads to a melting of the emergent time periodicity, in contrast to stable long-time behavior which can be maintained for nearest neighbor XXZ type interactions.
I am happy to see this out in the @NJPhysics.
for the bank holiday, i shall redirect my efforts more suitably to remembering joys of my childhood. Screw pumpkins...carved turnips are proper nightmare material
great to see this out into the world -- and thanks to the @AvHStiftung funding which made it possible. I learned a lot doing this...particularly the subtleties about what systems we might (or might not!) consider a bona-fide time crystal.
i just hope that with the formation of the new @Researchirel this will come with a renewed look at underfunding of research in Ireland (at 0.2% GDP the country will struggle to be internationally competitive)

kudos to Brody for both an interesting work and for using Yes, Prime Minister as the subject

the scene it refers to is one of the many excellent moments

and stint 2 of my @AvHStiftung fellowship w/@jenseisert and @QuControlBerlin wraps up. Scientifically it was amazing.
And dare I say that personally, I may have had even more fun this year enjoying the other things Berlin and nearby places had to offer (....like WACKEN!!)
my last weekend in Germany before I head back to Dublin and I managed to squeeze in another tattoo convention -- this time with added metal.
And indeed I leave with a fresh #kneeditch tattoo
just got to Oxford and i am bringing some class to the Keble college...also had a chance to see Einstein's blackboard.
Oxford is a bit like Disneyland for academics
Having just seen Amon Amarth at Wacken, I understand that this is Thor smashing his anvil above Berlin.
I shall have a good evening watching out my window and listening to Twilight of the Thunder God, I'm just missing the drinking horn.
A wonderful paper that also kicks off a new Focus on Thermodynamics of Quantum Coherent Platforms collection for @QuantSciTech we are pulling together.
Submissions are open https://t.co/HTioJxgEVm
My work with Sebastian Deffner (@quthermo_comp) and Diogo O Soares-Pinto, "Conditional quantum thermometry—enhancing precision by measuring less" has just been published on Quantum Science and Technology: https://t.co/6BGDVfLQC1 via @QuantSciTech
Happy reading!
i am sad that I'm missing #QTD2024 this year, but I had a good reason.
the last few months i've been back in Berlin on stint #2 of my @AvHStiftung fellowship w/@jenseisert & I've taken full advantage to experience all aspects of German culture!(& doing some fun science obvs!)
@HyperboIeva @taliesinb@MattWillani@symbolica@PhasecraftLtd i'm glad it you also had fun that day. I dunno about you, but the near 3 hours (if memory serves correctly!) seemed to pass in a flash!
while I doubt we'll abandon writing grant proposals anytime soon, I don't think the results of this study will come as a massive shocker to many.

(1/n) Introducing 🥁... the autonomous quantum processing unit! Our proposal for a thermodynamically self consistent model of quantum computation which we hope will serve as a framework to examine the physics of computation and complexity.

Now that term is finished, I take myself to the cinema to see xmas classic Die Hard and what is the first thing I see!?! @antmarcarr pushing his astrophysics agenda for @ucddublin@UCD_physics
I had a cracking time last night getting out of @ucddublin and heading to the pub for #PintOfQuantum to have a go at explaining the u̶n̶c̶e̶r̶t̶a̶i̶n̶t̶y̶ (indeterminacy!!) principles while not so elegantly sidestepping questions about interpretations of quantum mechanics!
