Communism is Not About Your Lived Experience:

In leftist circles you’ll often hear the phrase “listen to people’s lived experience” thrown around. In this post I will be breaking down why communist analysis is not primarily based in lived experience and why focusing on lived experience can be detrimental to communist politics.

First things first, lived experience is not irrelevant to communist politics. Lived experience can reveal contradictions that theory must delve into and investigate, but lived experience can, at most, provide a one-sided perspective on the matter at hand.

Lived experience can, at most, provide us with an understanding of capitalism in its immediate appearance. The proletariat experiences exploitation, but that individual experience alone cannot explain why this exploitation occurs. When we begin from the methodological standpoint of the individual, we cannot adequately grasp the social relations between people beyond their immediate appearance.

What we must understand is that the lived experience of any given individual is made possible only through the social relations in which they exist. The proletariat has the experience of the proletariat because it occupies a specific and determinate structural position in relation to capital. Due to occupying this position they are structurally compelled to sell their labor power for a wage and occupy all the determinations of the proletariat. If we want to analyze the proletarian condition we must first start from the social relations that produce that contradiction.

Experience in and of itself also cannot be a valid political criterion as social relations are experienced unevenly. Two different proletarians may have vastly different experiences of the proletarian condition while occupying the same set of social relations and relation to capital. Experience alone cannot adequately grasp the contradictions of our society, nor can it determine the practical terms for social transformation as it remains paralyzed by its individualistic analysis.

Workers, by virtue of being workers, do not inherently possess magical knowledge of how the capitalist mode of production operates. Class consciousness develops progressively and unevenly and many workers fall prey to the bourgeois veneer of society. Experiencing a structural position does not equate to consciously grasping the structural determinations of that position. Genuine proletarian class consciousness is only achieved at the point at which the proletariat, as a class, consciously grasps their position within the totality of capital.

When lived experience is substituted for critical analysis, we risk becoming isolated from the possibility of practical political transformation. Politics can collapse into a game of whose lived experience carries more authority rather than understanding that our experiences are connected expressions of a unified but contradictory social totality. When we start from the social relations that connect our various experiences we are able to adequately contextualize these experiences and how they interact with one another.

Our individual lived experiences are not isolated from one another. We all exist within an interconnected capitalist social totality and all of our experiences are interconnected expressions of this totality. Experience can be important to analyze, but it is not a substitute for critical analysis of the social relations through which we produce and reproduce our lives.

Communism is not the universalization of recognition of our specific individual experiences. It does not entail our individual liberation detached from the social relations that oppress us. Communism entails conscious social transformation on a societal level, therefore in our analysis of how to produce it we must start from the social relations that constitute society at large.
