Sheryl Lee Ralph—famous for her breakout role in the original Broadway production of 'Dreamgirls' and her ongoing portrayal of the no-nonsense kindergarten teacher on the sitcom 'Abbott Elementary'—champions another kind of teaching through her decades-long work as an activist, particularly raising awareness about HIV/AIDS.
Recently, in collaboration with the DIVA Foundation, the nonprofit she founded in 1990, Ralph executive-produced documentary special 'Living Proof' which highlights the experiences of Black women living with HIV in the South. yeah this made me start crying like the AIDS crisis overall is not discussed as much as it should be, but information about how it impacted Black queer women specifically is even harder to find.
