Another elephant in the room that needs to be talked about, addressed, and corrected is the fact that white people and Indians earn more than Black people within the same company, in the same position, and with the same workload.
Iโm a lot like Jesus Christ in the sense that I showed a lot of promise as a child and then basically fell off in my 20โs but returned at 33 to pop off unimaginably hard
Corporations like Balwin deny people homeownership by buying vast tracts of well-located land, build tiny, dodgy apartments on this land and then rent these out to the people who now canโt afford to buy land to build houses anymore.
Many of these overpriced units are sold to โbuy-to-letโ investors rather than families, which creates a market where the primary goal is rental yield rather than homeownership.
And when the only new housings being built are โlifestyleโ estates, it forces people into the rental market because the entry price to buy into those same areas is unrealistic for the average salary.
Yes, Balwin and others are building new apartment complexes, but the trick is they hoard land by buying it years before they intend to build, but then just build enough to keep demand and prices elevated.
By controlling the best-located land, these corporate developers prevent smaller, more diverse developers from entering the space. Because if one company owns the next 10 yearsโ worth of developable land in a specific โgrowth nodeโ, they effectively set the price for that entire area.
This high price makes property a โgood investmentโ for wealthy people and corporations, who keep buying the apartments because they know people have no choice but to rent from them.
Then, enter the neoliberal ideology that says the government should stay out of the markets, housing market included.
This creates a situation where developers pay bulk infrastructure levies to the city to connect water, electricity, and roads to new developments themselves because the government isnโt building this infrastructure fast enough.
So, developers end up building their own mini-grids or water systems and then pass those costs directly to the buyer.
So, over and above paying for a home, youโre also paying for the private utility system that the neoliberals said the state should keep out of because the private sector can do it more efficiently.
Therefore, anyone brave enough to buy a home in the urban areas pays a premium to cover the developerโs costs, and then pays monthly levies to maintain them, while still paying rates and taxes to a municipality that should provide the service in the first place, if it wasnโt for โpRiVatE sEcTor iS mOre efFiciEnt๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ.
This adds up to 30% to the cost of a new home compared to what it would be if the state provided the bulk services.
The outcome is that you are left with people unable to form households, multigenerational overcrowding, and massive portions of income going to rent.
