if you’ve been around the @talentlayer ecosystem, you’ll know we’re all about #buildinginpublic - from sdk design methodologies to documentation update movie trailers.

a lot of teams build in public, but when it comes to fundraising, all of a sudden teams turn secretive. never have i seen real stories shared in real-time around fundraising. this is because advisors will tell you it’s not strategic.

here’s some of the common arguments on why you should be more secretive around your raise:

🕑 if you are fundraising for too long, vcs will become disinterested (if you take a while to raise, vcs will assume other vcs didn’t like you and they shouldn’t either) - therefore, keeping when you started fundraising a secret is important

💸 if you are raising a round under $$$, it’s better to not announce it when it loses - you don’t want people thinking you are a “small fish”

🤐 if your competition sees your deck or any other important fundraising documents, that’ll be bad news for you - only share them with people you trust

but, i have a theory - the theory goes like this:

🤝 by fundraising in public we can get in front of a higher alignment subset of investors - ones that value openness like we do

🚀 by sharing our story, we can inspire and help other builders as they fundraise - the same reason we #buildinpublic

so, we’re gonna do it. 😎

after all, everything in life is an experiment.

so, what’s our plan?

i’ll be posting daily updates on what we’re doing that day re the fundraise. it’s mostly @Romain__TL and me working on this rn, with help from @spanish_vanish and some of our other opensource contributors and our advisors too. will give shoutouts as we go alone, per usual. 😉
