Just to clarify this because I went back and checked the actual document:

If by “Pledis asked for exemption” they’re referring to the 2021 KMCA case, then yes, Pledis was one of 26 member companies that signed an industry-wide submission to the Ministry of National Defense.

But here’s what that submission was actually about:

In 2020, South Korea amended the Military Service Act to allow certain distinguished pop-culture artists to defer their military service until the age of 30. This was NOT a military exemption.

The amendment was introduced amid the public and political debate over BTS’s military service and their unprecedented contribution to South Korea’s global cultural image. The bill was proposed by lawmaker Jeon Yong-gi in September 2020, shortly after BTS became the first South Korean pop act to top the Billboard Hot 100 with “Dynamite.” The National Assembly subsequently passed the amendment in December.

But there was a major problem with how eligibility was going to work.

The system was designed around pop-culture artists who had received high or highest government cultural honors such as the Order/Medal of Cultural Merit and who were also recommended by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism for their contribution to enhancing Korea’s national reputation.

The problem was that the existing criteria for those cultural honors were based on long-term careers. KMCA pointed out that recipients of these honors had an average age of 67.7, and that the relevant award criteria generally required around 15 years of activity.

Most K-pop artists debut in their mid-to-late teens. So under those criteria, a young idol could theoretically become eligible only after reaching their 30s, precisely when the new military deferment benefit would no longer be useful.

And this is where BTS was the obvious exception: BTS had received the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit in 2018, only five years after debut, under an exceptional recognition of their contribution to spreading Korean culture and the Korean language globally. KMCA explicitly noted that BTS were the only musicians in the previous decade who could actually meet the requirements while still within the relevant enlistment age.

So KMCA’s argument was essentially:

If this is supposed to be a system for outstanding pop-culture artists, why are the eligibility criteria structured in a way that makes it practically impossible for young K-pop artists other than the exceptional case of BTS to ever benefit from it?

That is what the industry was challenging.

Pledis was one of the companies that later signed KMCA’s collective submission concerning these criteria. That does NOT mean Pledis petitioned for SEVENTEEN or any other specific group to receive a military exemption.

And the organization leading the initiative was KMCA, not Pledis or SEVENTEEN. It was an industry-wide issue involving multiple entertainment companies.

So if THAT is what the original post meant, then yes, there is a real 2021 KMCA case they may be referring to.

But “Pledis signed an industry-wide submission challenging the criteria for military-service DEFERMENT” and “Pledis petitioned for SEVENTEEN or any other group to receive a military EXEMPTION using BTS’s achievements” are two completely different claims.

The first is documented.
