… year, they should be. But language classes are often considered enrichment or extra. And expecting a student to do work in them is, in the words of another summer school student (about me), “doing too much”

Today in summer school news: I received a probably well intentioned email from a colleague regarding a failing student. He’s a nice kid and he says he’s fluent in Spanish, but he’s failing your class. I’m shocked! Hopefully, he’ll be okay. (paraphrased)

But there’s also a very low level of professional respect here for what language learning is, and this is not uncommon. Heritage/Native speakers can grow so much by having classes in their languages. While the classes are not rostered that way in summer or during a regular school

When you’re a teacher you work with the same people every day, day in, day out, for years. You interact, laugh, commiserate, work towards a goal, count on each other - a colleague can have particular strengths that are so vital to our mission: educating children.

Some people don’t take up a lot of space or energy in this world with their presence, but they do with their absence. And when you have a colleague who is so good at what he does and kids really respond, that absence is felt.

No one asked me but these summer school mega sites are not a good idea. Putting kids who struggled in a class of 30+ in a new class of many who also struggled seems counter productive. The smaller sites from the past few years made a better experience.

@stoodle I had students come for a re teach session once a week and then they could earn back 50% of the points they lost. It worked pretty well and was a way to handle make up work at the same time. This was only available for quizzes.

@MarshDuxfemina It was a good sign that in 1 school had to wait 10 yrs for a room -low turnover. I’m good w/ time at beginning & end of classes, but it took time/cooperation to get there. Yesterday I realized the stress those transitions cause me, everything has to be super organized/prepared!

Year 24 teaching is almost over for me & yesterday I had my own classroom for a day. I had lunch in the room with my friends & didn’t freeze. I left for the day feeling peaceful & less stressed. I forgot work could feel that way. I’m an experienced floater but this was so nice.
