Had a really disappointing interaction with a gate agent for @AmericanAir tonight at DFW.

When boarding began, he announced that passengers with disabilities would not be preboarding, despite the purpose of preboarding being to give us the time we need to safely navigate the jet bridge, stow essential items, and get to our seats without being rushed. Instead, we were told to board with ConciergeKey members.

Then, when I reached the gate to board, he told me I couldn’t bring my carry-on onto the aircraft and that I had to gate-check it.

I explained that my bag contained my medication and a medical device, and that I had flown this exact route on this same aircraft just a few weeks ago with the very same bag, which fit without issue.

His response was that my options were to gate-check the bag or not board the flight.

I’ve never before been forced to separate from my medication and medical equipment while traveling.

But my alternative was missing my flight home and, in turn, missing my infusion appointment tomorrow morning.

So I gate-checked it.

People with disabilities are too often put in impossible situations like this: choose between protecting medically necessary equipment or getting where we need to be. We shouldn’t have to make that choice.

Accessibility isn’t about convenience. It’s about ensuring people with disabilities can travel safely, with dignity, and without being forced to compromise their health.
