The most disturbing part of the Pallavi Purkayastha case (that shook the nation's conscience in 2012) isn’t just the brutality of the crime. It is how the system almost let her killer Sajja Mughal Pathan (who was a security guard in her apartment) walk away.

A convicted murderer was granted parole, then vanished for 1.5 years before being tracked down near the Pakistan border.

Yesterday, the Bombay HC finally upheld life imprisonment but refused the State’s plea for a death sentence.

For a such a heinous crime, the big question is how did such a dangerous offender get parole in the first place?
When procedural leniency lets convicts flee, and the harshest penalties are withheld even in the most extreme cases, the law is a joke.
