For a couple of weeks now, recruitment lists have been flying around the disability community for a supposed Forum with the President, similar to the engagements with various other groups that State House has been conducting.

To be clear, this approach is extremely flawed and those charged with this idea must seriously reflect on what accessible and inclusive engagements with the disability community actually look like, if of course, that even matters.

Let’s touch on a very basic issue. Caregivers and personal aides report that they are being cut out from this dialogue, that PWDs are being instructed to sign up without the very people who support their ability to function.

If you are having an engagement with the physically disabled, the blind, the deaf, the neurodivergent, how can the caregiver be excluded? PWDs are a package deal and caregivers MUST be part of that. They are not an optional extra, they are the primary support system making participation possible - and in many cases, the main advocate for the individual’s needs.

If the goal is to listen to the disability community, you must remove barriers related to travel, mobility, and universal design, ensuring everyone that you recruit participates meaningfully, and not for optics. Accessibility cannot be an afterthought, it must be built into the invitation itself.

Real inclusion is not just bringing Persons with Disabilities into your space; it is creating the conditions for everyone to be heard. And if you don’t know how, uliza. #VIP
