Active shelling destroys communities and whole neighbourhoods, incl Omdurman.
#Khartoum needs major #shelter + infrastructural repair, #urban regeneration.

Mostly though, use of explosive weaponry in populated areas must be limited.

Casualty and destruction aside, girls and boys in the capital hear or feel explosions daily, never knowing if that might hit them, or a family member, or friend. The situation is unsafe, and their sense of safety also becomes distorted.

The psychological and socio-economic damages however might never be mapped.

I’ve been in capitals that quickly changed control (eg Sana’a, Kabul) but I struggle to think of recent times where there has been such intensive and prolonged battles within urban areas of a capital city — even todays mega-crises of Syria, Ukraine, DRC, Myanmar etc don’t quite suffer this. Nothing in this generation. I think of, perhaps, 90s Mogadishu, or 80s Beirut, or 70s Saigon — all treated as globally significant events. Nowhere near the same attention is given to the people of Sudan. This generation must do much better.
