Former Canada Prime Minister Jean Chrétien: "I have message for American friends...never mistake our generosity for weakness. Never mistake our tolerance for lack of determination. And never, never mistake our kindness for softness...We bow to no one."

As we enter 2026, our border is only getting stronger with more officers, tech. & intelligence-sharing.
The Palmyra Hotel in Baalbek, established in 1874, is a living testament to Lebanon’s cultural heritage. Overlooking the ancient Roman ruins, this historic establishment has borne witness to over a century of history, hosting world figures like German Emperor Wilhelm II, Charles de Gaulle, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Albert Einstein, and legendary artists gracing the Baalbek Festival stage, including Joan Baez, Ella Fitzgerald, and Fairuz.
In 1998, Nina Simone herself left an unforgettable memory here, asking for a bottle of Veuve Clicquot rosé, which was scouted from the entire Beqaa Valley just for her performance. The walls of Room 27 still hold the haunting gaze of a face sketched by Jean Cocteau during his stays in 1956 and 1960, a lasting imprint of the hotel’s storied past.
Yet today, this treasure stands in the shadow of destruction, and we already went through this serious issue. Recent airstrikes have devastated the historic homes surrounding the Palmyra, leaving it shaken and scarred. Despite its resilience through Lebanon’s civil war and the 2006 conflict, the Palmyra now faces unprecedented danger. Rabih Salika, a devoted employee of over 20 years, still tends to the hotel’s creaking halls, keeping alive its memory in the face of debris and decay. But the Palmyra’s walls, once echoing with the voices of history, now hold a silence of loss, a silence that belongs not just to Lebanon, but to the entire world.
This is more than the destruction of a building; it is a wound in our shared human story, a piece of history turning to dust. The Palmyra Hotel, like Baalbek itself, is a relic of the world’s cultural fabric, holding stories and memories that transcend borders. Its suffering calls on us all to act, to protect these irreplaceable treasures, to preserve these voices of the past.
The world must not turn away, for this heritage belongs to every one of us.

I repeat my call for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Middle East, the unconditional release of all hostages, and the delivery of life-saving supplies at the scale needed.
Everyone must assume their responsibilities.
This is a moment of truth.
History will judge us all.
