Putin says Russia’s economy and federal budget have become “significantly” less dependent on oil and gas revenues.

He said oil and gas once accounted for around 42–46% of GDP, but now make up “only 23%.”

“The difference is enormous,” Putin said.

On the federal budget, he said oil and gas revenues used to account for around 50%, but now make up “only 20%,” a figure he asked Finance Minister Anton Siluanov to confirm.

Putin said oil and gas still have “substantial significance,” but added that it's no longer accurate to call them “critically important” for Russia.

@DD_Geopolitics @BowesChay Barely any civilization or infrastructure on either side of the strait. It would be a tunnel in the middle of nowhere leading to absolutely nowhere. It would require expensive highways/railways to connect it to major economic centers which are simply too far away from the strait.

Putin rejects frequent claims that Russia is becoming an energy colony of China.

“We have equal relations with our Chinese partners and friends,” he said, adding that the share of Russia’s “high-tech exports” to China is “constantly increasing.”

On energy, Putin pointed to nuclear cooperation.

“We are building nuclear power plants in China,” he said. “Four units of our design are already operating, and we are building another four.”

@zhaomanfeng @agent_of_change Cuba, Venezuela and Iran have been his fixation since his 1st term, Cuba was always going to come up. While Cuba is not alone, the lackluster response of international activists is disappointing, they should be flocking to Cuba, form human shields around government buildings etc.

@agent_of_change He clearly wanted to sweep Venezuela, Iran and Cuba before the 250th anniversary celebrations, the only reason he hasn't made a move yet is the ongoing stalemate with Iran. He knows it's not popular so he would have to do it well before the midterms which he will lose either way.
