Google Maps really drove this idea home to me. Before Maps, there were all sorts of interesting and sophisticated mapping exe's around. Microsoft had a great one that you could attach to databases and use the VBA programming language on, etc.. And then Maps came along and most other programs died shortly thereafter.

And I get it. Maps did what probably 80% of the users needed, got you from A to B. The old way incentivized appealing to the widest use-case, and the new way incentivised competing for the 80%. Smart business, and when you make it "free" it is unstoppable. For a couple of decades after, powerful mapping lived only in expensive bespoke solutions that probably had to pay Google anyway to get good road data.

I never worked for a union, but was forced to work with them many times. In my youth, I traveled around the country building retail fixtures and displays. Work in a place like Chicagoland, and most companies forced us to use local union carpenters while we supervised. Our teams were very efficient, and our budgeting was based off that. These union dudes were slow as tar and would not work more than 8 hours. Our solution? When a shipment of parts came in we'd go to dinner after 8 hours, go back to the job site and paper the windows, and then build all of the fixtures, put them back on their pallets and shrink wrap them. In the morning, we'd just have the union dudes unpack them, move them into place and level and clean them.
