13k Ugandans responded to our #SautiStream radio poll asking what they think of online activists expressing their discontent on the internet.
51% feel represented, 21% are aware but don’t feel respected and 28% are unaware of online activism altogether. This means almost half of our respondents are excluded from online conversations.
We’ve organized an X Space in partnership with @chapterfourug and @cipesaug to not only explore the role of digital activism in promoting freedom of expression but also discuss the challenges of inclusivity in Uganda’s activism.

These are the regional results from 15,755 respondents. Why do you think there are large regional differences?

"Some people suggest that we should take the conversations happening on social media and bring them to local districts and communities.
However, we often overlook the fact that these conversations are largely limited to a small, elite group – approximately 10% of the population – creating an echo chamber of sorts.
Simply amplifying these voices to the broader public would mean we're not truly listening to their concerns; instead, we'd be imposing our perspectives.
Therefore, we need to find ways to represent and engage those who are not active on social media. This distinction is crucial: it's the difference between merely reaching people and genuinely engaging with them." - Wouter Dijkstra, Director of TRAC FM, speaking on a panel under the theme: Leveraging the power of media and digital tools for the promotion of human rights.

Only 23% of poll respondents know the correct rules for lawful public assembly -- notifying police 3 days in advance of a gathering.
31% Of Ugandans in our recent poll think peaceful demonstrations are not allowed at all! Yet, Article 29 of Uganda's Constitution protects your right to gather and express concerns peacefully—a cornerstone of democracy.
What do you think can be done to raise awareness about this right?
