Parents Protest in Abuja Over 16 Months of Unpaid Allowances for Students Abroad

Parents of Nigerian students studying overseas under the Federal Government’s Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) Scholarship Programme have protested at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, demanding the payment of 16 months’ outstanding living allowances.

The protesters blocked the entrance of the ministry, carrying placards to draw attention to their grievances.

The BEA scheme funds Nigerian students studying in countries such as Russia, China, Hungary, and Morocco, covering tuition, accommodation, medical care, and a monthly living allowance of $500 for both undergraduate and postgraduate scholars.

@SaharaReporters We didn't go to their doorstep to ask for the scholarship. They put it out there, we applied and followed due process before getting here. Just pay us our stipends, is that too much to ask? Nigeria is not the only country that have students abroad under Bilateral agreement.

@SaharaReporters One of us died recently of a chronic illness because he couldn't afford treatment and another student had an accident few months ago. We're here representing Nigeria as a nation, we don't deserve to be treated like animals. Even animals deserve to be well taken care of.
